Biology
Biology is the study of living things, It encompasses 4 major units, including Cells, Genetics, Evolution, and Ecology.
Our class will meet daily, Monday through Thursday and will include both lectures and hands-on labs. Hopefully, it will also include dissections at the end of the year. Each unit will include a major lab over which there will be a required written lab report.
Weekly Work and Information
Jan 25-29
We will continue studying C14 on Human Heredity.
Students will begin researching a chosen genetic disorder for a 2-page typed paper and powerpoint for presenting to the class. This project will be due 2/8/2016.
We will continue notes on karyotypes, with an in-class activity.
We will also be determining any student’s blood type this week.
We will also be viewing the video “Cracking the Code of Life”, which talks about the Human Genome Project and different genetic disorders.
Students should be reading lessons 14.1, 14.2, 14.3 and 14.4. Notes will be given during class on all lessons.
Worksheets 14.1 and 14.2 have already been submitted by students,
Feb 1-5
We will be completing C14 on Human Heredity and beginning C15 on Genetic Engineering
Students should complete the “Cloning Activity” online and bring their signed papers to class on Tuesday (2/2)
We will be doing notes on 15.2 Tuesday and finish up on Wednesday with 15.3/15.4.
Students should be studying for their exam on Thursday 2/4. This test will be over both chapter 14 and chapter 15.
Feb 8 - 11
We will begin our unit on C12 and C13 on DNA structure and Protein synthesis.
Students will work Monday on their chosen Human Genetic Disorder report and presentation. These will be due Wed 2/10. Students will be expected to present a short powerpoint presentation to the class on 2/10.
Vocabulary for C12/13 is due Tues 2/9.
Worksheet 12.1 will be due Tuesday, as well as a concept map on DNA.
Worksheet 12.2 will be due Wed 2/10
We will be doing a lab extracting DNA from split peas on Thursday. DON’T MISS class if at all possible.
Feb 15-18
Students will begin studying the structure of DNA and its history of discovery.
Students will make edible DNA and explain all its parts and structure.
On Thursday, students will extract DNA from split peas.
Feb 22-25
3/21 - 3/24
This week we will begin studying Classification, C18. This unit begins the study of the different kingdoms and how organisms are classified into groups.
Vocabulary words are due 3/22.
Worksheet 18.1 due Weds.
Worksheet 18.2 due Thursday.
We will have a test next week, probably Wednesday over just C18
3/28 - 4/1
We begin studying the Ecology Unit of Biology.

4/4 - 4/7
This week begins our study on C3, Ecology
Students will be studying the levels of organization within the biosphere and food webs and food chains.
Students will also study trophic levels and how nutrients cycle within the biosphere.

Students worked on 3.3 in class and will complete on Thursday. We will begin learning nutrient cycles (3.4).
Students should expect a test over C3 by Tuesday (4/12)
4/11 - 4/14
This week we complete C3 on Ecology and will have an exam on Thursday.
Students will study biogeochemical cycles, with notes on the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous cycle on Monday and Tuesday. The worksheet 3.4 will be due Tuesday.
Students will view “Earth: A new Wild” on Wednesday in regards to showcasing different biomes.
We will also do the chapter review, which will be due Wednesday.
Environmental Science
Environmental Science is a dual-credit class in which students receive both high school and college credit (provided they receive a "C" or higher.) Fall semester is ENVR 111, which is an introduction to sustainability. Students will study complex contemporary problems facing our communities involving food, water, energy and community needs. Spring semester is ENVR 112, which involves sustainable technologies involving energy.
Weekly Work and Information
Jan 25-29
We will continue learning about water and its use on the planet.
Students should be doing a Water Quality Report on Santa Fe’s water system. These questions will be due Tues/Weds.
We will continue watching the video “Flow” and answering questions.
We will be finishing notes this week on C15, with notes on desalination (students should read article given in class)
Feb 1-5
Students will complete notes on C15 on Freshwater Resources (2/1) and begin our unit on C16, Water Pollution.
Students will have an activity on the SF Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP), which will be due 2/8 or 2/9.
Students will have an exam on both chapters 15 and 16 on 2/10 or 2/11.
Students have been given questions on C15, which will be due either 2/3 or 2/5. They will be given questions on C16 Monday (2/1) which will be due the day of their test. Both sets of questions can be used as a study guide for their test.
A reminder….students were given an assignment before the holiday break in regards to completing a “Scrapbook” for environmental science. These will be due 2/17 or 2/18. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT (students have been given 2 months to complete)
Feb 8 - 11
We will continue notes on C16, Water Pollution, with an expected test on 2/10 or 2/11 over both chapters 15 and 16.
An online activity on the SF Wastewater Treatment Plant is due 2/8 or 2/9.
We will continue talking about ways to conserve water.
Feb 15-18
Students will begin a unit on geology and mining.
2/15 – Students will go online and complete an activity involving the rock cycle and different types of rocks.
Students will have a scrapbook on environmental science articles due on 2/17 or 2/18. This assignment was given to the students before the Christmas holidays.
Students should be checking the website http://earthquakes.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map and record earthquakes for 3 days. At that point students should answer the questions. This activity is due 2/22 or 2/23.
3/21-3/24
This week begins our study of C20 on Petroleum. We will continue watching the video “A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash”.
We will be doing notes on C20 and completing the video.
We will have a test over just C20 next week.
3/28 - 3/31
Students will complete the chapter on Petroleum (c20)
We will continue watching the video “A Crude Awakening”, which showcases the problems with reaching “peak oil”.
Questions, which will count as the exam, are due Wednesday/Thursday.
4/4 - 4/7
This week we begin studying Renewable Resources, such as wind, sun and water resources.
Vocab C 24/25 due Monday/Tuesday
We will begin watching the film “carbon nation” which highlights each type of renewable energy resource available to us.
We will be discussing advantages and disadvantages of wind, solar, geothermal and water.
4/11 - 4/14
We will complete notes on C24, which studies renewable sources of energy such as wind, solar and water.
We will be finishing the video “Carbon Nation” and will have an exam on Wednesday/Thursday.
Next, we will be studying biofuels, C25. Vocabulary will be due 4/18 or 4/19. In this unit we will be visiting the Biofuels Lab in the Trades and Tech building in the SFCC campus.
